His father, João Ramos, had been a promising footballer whose career ended prematurely due to a knee injury. Unable to afford a proper ball, young Pelé kicked a grapefruit and later a sock stuffed with newspaper through the dusty streets, developing the ball control that would make him famous. He was nicknamed “Pelé” as a child — he mispronounced the name of a local player, Bilé, and the name stuck.

At 15, Pelé was signed by Santos FC, and the following year he made his professional début, scoring on his first appearance. At the 1958 FIFA World Cup in Sweden, a 17-year-old Pelé took the world by storm, scoring a hat trick in the semifinal against France and two goals in the final against Sweden, becoming the youngest player ever to score in a World Cup final. Over his career, he won three World Cups (1958, 1962, 1970) — a feat no male player has matched. He scored 1,279 goals in 1,363 professional games, a Guinness World Record.
