Author Spotlight: Macklemore — The Seattle Rapper Who Beat Addiction, Won the Grammys, and Refused to Stay Silent
A deep dive on Macklemore — the Seattle rapper born Benjamin Hammond Haggerty who started as an independent artist called Professor Macklemore, made 'Thrift Shop' the first independently released song to top the Billboard Hot 100 in nearly twenty years, and won four Grammys with Ryan Lewis for The Heist; the artist whose songs about love ('Same Love'), beauty ('Thrift Shop' and 'Glorious'), race ('White Privilege II'), and addiction ('Otherside' and 'Starting Over') made him one of pop's most unusual superstars; the recovering alcoholic who went public about his relapses and overdose, told President Obama that 'addiction isn't a personal choice or a personal failure,' and bought into the Seattle Sounders and Seattle Kraken; his defining reflections on respect, addiction, love, race, and human freedom; and the legacy of the 43-year-old rapper removed from Ed Sheeran's tour in September 2026 after a 'Free Palestine' speech, when his name surged back up English Wikipedia's most-read pages and the acts around him walked out in solidarity.
